There are any number of different stair styles in common use today but for the sake of this article we’re going to concentrate on only two: “regular stairs”, which we are defining as standard L shaped stairs which rise a number of steps and then take a 90 degree turn either left or right, and “circular stairs”. While circular stairs and “spiral stairs” are often confused for one another there is a subtle but important difference. Spiral stairs wrap tightly around a central support pole while circular stairs have an airy space (sometimes called an atrium) down the middle and are supported at the exterior.
Regular Stairs vs Circular Stairs for Toronto Homes
Regular stairs as the name implies are a more popular choice than circular stairs in Toronto but each type has its advantages and disadvantages. Let’s start with regular L shaped stairs.
The Advantages of Regular L-Shaped Stairs
- They’re more visually interesting than straight stairs.
- The L-shape provides a bit of privacy between floors.
- They don’t require as much straight line space as straight stairs.
- The landing provides an area for people to safely pass or catch their breath.
- They can be squeezed into the corner of a space allowing for more design flexibility.
- They’re typically less expensive to build than circular stairs.
The Disadvantages of Regular L-Shaped Stairs
- Because of the landing they require more complex engineering.
- The 90 degree turn can make it difficult to move large items from floor to floor.
- Because of the 90 degree turn handrails are also more complex to design and install.
- The landing requires a fair bit of support, which can be unsightly in open plan spaces.
Circular stairs are not all that common but are never anything short of memorable. Like everything though they have their advantages and disadvantages.
The Advantages of Circular Stairs
- Some circular stairs in Toronto homes are very compact.
- They’re safer than standard spiral stairs that can be extremely tight.
- A home with a well-designed circular stairway is a more valuable home.
- They add an unmistakable air of elegance and even grandeur to any home.
- The view up or down through the “atrium” provides visual continuity from floor to floor.
The Disadvantages of Circular Stairs
- Falling can be a concern for some.
- They can be more expensive to build than other stairs.
- Passing can be tricky depending on how tight the circle is.
- There’s no landing where people can rest and catch their breath.
- It can be difficult to move large, heavy items up and down circular stairs.
- Even though they’re not as tight as spiral stairs they can be difficult for children and the elderly to navigate.
Both regular and circular stairs for Toronto homes have their upside and downside. Which you choose for your house, townhouse, loft or condo will depend in large part on the overall design of your home, the amount of space you have to dedicate to the stairway and your budget.
